Breast augmentation for women

Small breasts can be enlarged without problems by means of silicone implants. Today, these implants have been perfected and are therefore safe. The so-called “capsule contracture” (= the formation of scar tissue) only occurs in about 2 % of cases.

What does the surgery involve?

The implants are usually put underneath the muscle. The operation is performed with local anaesthetic and a sedative (half-sleep). It is not necessary to stay in the clinic over night. If the patient wants a general anaesthetic, we recommend a stay in the clinic. The operation will last about 1 hour. The cut will be performed in the crease under the breast (the inframammary fold).

The implant can also be inserted via the areola (the "nipple" incision) or via the armpit (transaxillary). All the implant options will be discussed individually with the patient – I usually recommend the insertion via the inframammary fold, since the scars are usually very subtle and unobtrusive.

The size of the breast is also discussed before the operation. Usually, the patients want a B or C cup size.

What happens after surgery?

After the operation, you have to take it easy for at least 2-3 weeks. Since only self-dissolving stitches are used, there will be no extra removal of the sutures. A proper sports bra has to be worn for at least 6-8 weeks, day and night. It may take up to six weeks for you to return to any sports activities. Sport or heavy lifting is forbidden during convalescence.

Post-operative problems are individual and can last 2-4 days. There are many post-operative checks, initially every six months, then every year.

A change of implants is only necessary, if a capsule contracture appears. Usually the implants last a life-time. Regular clinical and ultra-sound checks, however, are essential.
