Breast reconstruction
The removal of a breast after a mastectomy is sometimes absolutely necessary. This loss causes a lot of stress for women. My experience of breast reconstruction using the patient’s own tissue or breast implants has been gained over more than 25 years. I have written numerous scientific articles and I have held lectures all over the world to present my developments in operative methods.
The patient’s own tissue used for the reconstruction of the breast, can be taken from the back, the belly, the thighs, or the buttocks. The various options will be discussed with the patient. When a patient is very thin, the buttock is usually the only option. Other patients are able to choose the source area.
In most cases, the reconstructed breast is a little smaller, which is usually the wish of the patients – after 3-6 months the second breast has to be adjusted. At this point the nipple of the reconstructed breast can be formed.
Discussions concerning the various options cannot be done over the telephone or email. A personal examination in a clinic and with a consultation with the surgeon is absolutely essential. Regular follow-up care is necessary, and depends on the individual’s needs.
The success of this type of surgical procedure depends on the experience of the surgeon.
